It is well known that smoking can cause many health issues and a new study suggests that patients who used to or currently smoke more than 20 packs a year have greater risks of having numerous ocular diseases, including glaucoma. Research suggests that among glaucoma patients, heavy smokers are more likely to have visual field loss in affected eyes.
A test was taken with 354 patients participating and the end results had shown that the patients who have a higher smoking rate, were associated with faster visual loss.
Researchers have also indicated that even heavy smokers who quit the habit years ago, may still run into consequences of lasting damage from the high level of chemical inhalation and nicotine absorption.
